Recorded live at the Olympia Theatre in Paris on 15 April 1961, this wonderful album captures pianist and Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein leading a superb all-star group through a swinging, relaxed programme in the heart of the French capital. The lineup is magnificent — Ruby Braff on trumpet, the velvet-toned Vic Dickenson on trombone, the wonderfully idiosyncratic Pee Wee Russell on clarinet, and Jimmy Woode on bass. Together they deliver traditional jazz and swing in a manner that's utterly free of cliché — open, inventive, and brimming with the special magic that only live music can produce.
