James Moody And His Swedish Crowns - James Moody 1949 (DRLP 95)
Sweden was very good to James Moody, and this superb 1986 compilation on Dragon Records proves it! Originally recorded for the Metronome label in October 1949, these bop-fired sessions find the young Moody alongside some of Sweden's finest jazz musicians in various configurations, from quartets to larger ensembles, featuring players like Gösta Theselius, Lennart Köhlin, and Arne Domnerus. Highlights include Out Of Nowhere, These Foolish Things, Body And Soul, and the cheeky 'I'm In The Mood For Bop.' It's a joyful, historically important document of one of the earliest and most successful American-Scandinavian jazz partnerships.

James Moody - The Great Day (GCH 8090)
What a session this was! Recorded at the Nola Penthouse Studio in New York City on 17 and 18 June 1963 and originally released on Argo Records, The Great Day finds James Moody in spectacular company. Arranged and conducted by Tom McIntosh, the lineup reads like a jazz dream — trumpeters Thad Jones and Johnny Coles, flautist Hubert Laws, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Mel Lewis. This was actually the first documented studio encounter between Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, adding extra historic sparkle to an already fantastic record. Moody glides between flute, alto, and tenor with effortless brilliance throughout.

This is a wonderful chance to hear the young James Moody at his brilliant, adventurous best! Compiled by Prestige Records and drawing on recordings made in Stockholm, Sweden in 1949 with Swedish sidemen including Leppe Sundwall, Gösta Theselius, and Arne Domnerus, the twelve tracks include bebop classics like Lester Leaps In, Indiana, Body & Soul, and the track that would eventually become his signature, the irresistible 'I'm In The Mood For Love.' These concise, punchy performances — originally issued as 78s — showcase the fiery young saxophonist in top form, alternating thrillingly between tenor and alto.

Johnny Hodges - Blue Notes (SVLP 9175)

Recorded in New York City during August and October 1966, and produced by the legendary Creed Taylor, the album showcases Hodges' legendary gorgeous tone in peak form, backed by an all-star ensemble featuring trumpeters Snooky Young and Ernie Royal, with lush arrangements by conductor Jimmy Jones. Whether caressing a gorgeous ballad or playfully sauntering through an original blues, Hodges makes every note sing. His stunning interpretation of 'I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me' alone is worth the price of admission.
