Cal Collins - Cal Collins In San Francisco (CJ-71)
Prepare to fall in love with one of jazz's most under-celebrated guitarists! Recorded in 1978 for Concord Jazz, this wonderful trio set captures Cal Collins in relaxed, inspired form alongside bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Collins was a self-taught guitarist who learned his art on the streets and farms of Indiana before becoming Benny Goodman's guitarist in 1976, and his straight-ahead bop playing with deep swing-era roots is an absolute delight. Highlights include Miles Davis's Blue Haze, Miles' Theme, Sometimes I'm Happy, and a lovely reading of So What. Effortlessly swinging, deeply musical, and hugely enjoyable.

Ross Tompkins - Ross Tompkins And Good Friends (CJ-65)
What a warm, swinging gem from Concord Jazz! Recorded in Hollywood in 1978, this cool jazz delight teams versatile pianist Ross Tompkins — best known to many as a stalwart of The Tonight Show Band — with the tremendously expressive tenor saxophone of Al Cohn, plus a superb rhythm section of bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Nick Ceroli. Produced by Concord's Carl Jefferson, the record has an easy, conversational quality that makes it feel like eavesdropping on four friends making music purely for the joy of it. Tracks including Blue Lou and Lover Man are handled with elegant warmth and swinging finesse.

James Moody And His Swedish Crowns - James Moody 1949 (DRLP 95)
Sweden was very good to James Moody, and this superb 1986 compilation on Dragon Records proves it! Originally recorded for the Metronome label in October 1949, these bop-fired sessions find the young Moody alongside some of Sweden's finest jazz musicians in various configurations, from quartets to larger ensembles, featuring players like Gösta Theselius, Lennart Köhlin, and Arne Domnerus. Highlights include Out Of Nowhere, These Foolish Things, Body And Soul, and the cheeky 'I'm In The Mood For Bop.' It's a joyful, historically important document of one of the earliest and most successful American-Scandinavian jazz partnerships.

Johnny Hodges - Blue Notes (SVLP 9175)
Alto saxophone genius Johnny Hodges is absolutely sublime on this 1967 Verve Records gem! Recorded in New York City during August and October 1966, and produced by the legendary Creed Taylor, the album showcases Hodges' legendary gorgeous tone in peak form, backed by an all-star ensemble featuring trumpeters Snooky Young and Ernie Royal, with lush arrangements by conductor Jimmy Jones. Whether caressing a gorgeous ballad or playfully sauntering through an original blues, Hodges makes every note sing. His stunning interpretation of 'I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me' alone is worth the price of admission.

Featuring a stellar cast including violin legend Joe Venuti, guitarist George Van Eps, vocalist Clancey Hayes, and a host of accomplished sidemen including trumpeter Ray Linn and trombonist Moe Schneider, it captures the warm, swinging magic of a real jazz party in full flow. Traditional and swing styles sparkle throughout, making this a wonderfully intimate slice of late-1960s West Coast jazz life.
