Recorded in Hollywood in 1978, this cool jazz delight teams versatile pianist Ross Tompkins — best known to many as a stalwart of The Tonight Show Band — with the tremendously expressive tenor saxophone of Al Cohn, plus a superb rhythm section of bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Nick Ceroli. Produced by Concord's Carl Jefferson, the record has an easy, conversational quality that makes it feel like eavesdropping on four friends making music purely for the joy of it. Tracks including Blue Lou and Lover Man are handled with elegant warmth and swinging finesse.

These concise, punchy performances — originally issued as 78s — showcase the fiery young saxophonist in top form, alternating thrillingly between tenor and alto.
